I’m writing this at about 10:45 on election night. It’s still unclear who will win, but it seems to be leaning Trump. Regardless I want to ask and provide my own answer to a very simple question: what comes next?
I started writing something of a similar nature as a number of ultimate players I follow online were putting pressure on the governing bodies of the sport to call for a ceasefire in Palestine and a condemnation of the US-Israeli genocide of Palestinians. And I really wanted to know, from all of those people, what they thought came next. This isn’t meant to be a judgment at all. But a gentle call for perspective.
If/when Trump wins-what are you going to do? What comes next? Is it more tweeting? More online posting and political donations and petitions?
Do you have power? Lord knows I don’t. But I have some thoughts on how to build power so that even if Trump wins, the darkest parts of his platform will not take hold. My question is: what comes next?
For me, the same thing that I was doing yesterday, organizing the working class to build an alternative to this entire system. It’ll be a bit different. It’ll be harder, sure. Maybe the key point of legislation, the NLRA, which has stood for 90 years, gets ripped out from under me. But the fight goes on.
Unions predated the NLRA, so too has workplace organizing. People fought and died for unions that were never legal entities in the same way post-wagner act. I’d rather not go back to that. But if that is how capital forces us to organize, that is how capital forces us to organize.
If there’s one thing I want, it is for people to, this time around next year, be more organized. All the agitation, political analysis, means nothing if it isn’t channeled into building an alternative to this system which crushes the working class. A brighter future isn’t won in elections. It’s won on the shop floor. It is won by organizing key industries and taking power for ourselves. It's won in the community.
Yesterday I was organizing, today I was organizing, tomorrow I’ll be organizing. That's what comes next for me. What comes next for you?
